MANILA – All’s well that ends well for the Donaire father-and-son tandem.
In an interview, Nonito Donaire, Sr. revealed to Solar Sports Desk he has already reunited with estranged son Nonito Jr. and that they are set to relive the early years of their potent team-up that saw them score one of boxing’s terrifying knockout wins.
In that meaningful gathering was Donaire’s wife Rachel.
The elder Donaire also relished the chance to cuddle his grandson Jarel, the first born child of Nonito and Rachel.
“Tuwang-tuwa talaga ako nakarga ko yung apo ko. Kamukhang-kamukha ni Jun,” said Donaire.
A huge underdog during his first title attempt in 2007, Donaire recorded a scintillating 5 round knockout against then undefeated and pound-for-pound entrant Vic Darchinyan to claim the International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight crown.
Incidentally, Donaire’s next fight will be at featherweight against Darchinyan in a non-title showdown on November 9 in Las Vegas.
“After kami mag-meet sa Las Vegas, tinawagan ako the following day.
Donaire, Jr. is currently trained by Robert Garcia but Nonito, Sr. said he is more than willing to accept any role within the team.
After winning the flyweight championship, father and son teamed up for two title defences before personal indifferences forced them to part ways in 2008.
Donaire, Jr. went on to win three more division titles under different trainers from the Penalosa brothers Dodie Boy and Carl and later with Garcia.
Donaire Sr. meanwhile had the chance to guide former champion Marvin Sonsona and Filipina boxer Ana Julaton.
