MANILA -- The two San Mig Super Coffee top guns coach Tim Cone benched for the most part of the second half in Game 2 came up big for the Mixers Tuesday evening.
PJ Simon finished with 17 points and James Yap hit a dagger of a jumper as San Mig Super Coffee escaped past Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters, 77-75, in Game 3 of the PLDT Home TVolution Commissioner's Cup at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum Tuesday evening.
"It was a game for the ages. Two proud teams who don't quit. We have total respect for Talk 'N Text," said Cone after the pulsating victory, which put them ahead 2-1 in the best-of-five series.
Simon drilled in a baseline jumper off a screen by Marc Pingris to take a 71-69 lead with 2:25 left to play. But TnT's Ranidel de Ocampo answered with a long two and Jayson Castro nailed a triple over San Mig import James Mays to regain the upperhand, 71-75.
Mays, who topscored for the Mixers with 20 points, then completed a three-point play and Yap hit a crucial baseline jumper to take the lead for good, 76-75. Joe Devance iced the game with a split from the line.
Yap had 13 point on a 4-of-10 shooting clip.
Castro led the Tropang Texters with 21 points, but missed several three-pointers down the stretch including the supposedly game-winner.
Looking like a fine-tuned engine, the Mixers started the game with a seven-to-nothing run. They continued to put the pedal to the metal and took a 13-point lead a few minutes later, 23-9, on a run highlighted by a three-pointer and a long two by Yap.
But the Tropang Texters cut the deficit to eight with a mini six-to-nothing run, 15-23, before a basket by rookie Ian Sanglang pushed the lead back to double digits, 25-15 heading into the second frame.
Tropang Texters then shihfted into high gear in the second quarter and made a scintillating 11-2 surge to erase the 10-point Mixers lead. During that stretch, Castro dropped a seven-point bomb.
San Mig Super Coffee was holding a three-point buffer a few seconds past the halfway mark, but an uncontested right corner triple by KG Canaleta tied the game at 29-all.
