Richie Ticzon named GlobalPort coach

MANILA -- After a plethora of player changes, GlobalPort Batang Pier focused its rigodon on the coaching staff.

Failing to lure high profile assistant coaches Alex Compton, brothers Nash and Olsen Racela, the Sultan 900 Incorporated franchise named Richie Ticzon as the team’s new mentor, on an interim capacity.

No less than team owner Mikee Romero confirmed this development to Solar Sports Desk just moments after Ticzon led his team to a surprising 102-92 win over the Commissioner’s Cup champions Alaska Aces.

“Susugal tayo sa bata ngayon. I always do this. Parang business philosophy ko. Big risks, bigger returns,” said Romero, who is Forbes Magazine’s 26th richest Filipino.

“Richie has the promise, he had a good career as player. This time, I hope he makes good of the challenge I give him,” he added.

The sweet-shooting Ticzon was drafted fourth overall in 1994 by Pepsi, where he eventually played for Purefoods and Shell.

Initially, he was hired by Romero as a skills and shooting coach, but finally got the job after he showed promise in his short stint with the staff.

It will be recalled that Ticzon was once rumored to coach the FEU Tamaraws in 2011.

“Umaasa ako that Richie can deliver,” said Romero, who nonetheless bared that every figure on his team is always under evaluation.

Meanwhile, the 42-year-old team owner revealed that they had an amicable parting of ways with Baculi, who will now devote his time as the athletic director of the NU Bulldogs.

The fiery mentor has been juggling his role as Globalport coach and NU’s sports director since he was hired by the team last January.
